Gilbert loves the colour green

AND THINKS SUSTAINABILITY IS IMPORTANT

It's green everywhere you look because we've planted as much of the hotel as possible - inside and out. Besides looking beautiful, this has many other positive effects.

It’s not just a façade.

Gilbert likes to wear green because it keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As one of the few buildings in Vienna, the outer façade has been greened to improve the surrounding microclimate. This way, the façade barley stores any heat – on the contrary, it even has a cooling effect. This is why we don’t have tropical nights at the Gilbert. In winter, the evergreen plants have a heat-insulating effect. Just perfect.

More for the climate.

Gilbert has air conditioning but uses it sparingly. It starts running from 27°C and can’t be set below 22°C. The green façade does the rest and looks great doing it.

Gilbert’s laundry day.

Instead of sharing out a plethora of tiny shampoo bottles, we use normal-sized dispensers that are refilled daily by housekeeping. We buy our cosmetics from the Austrian company Lederhaas, which is 100% free of animal testing. In addition, the ingredients used are purely organic. And they smell wonderful!

We use detergents sparingly, without compromising on hygiene. In the future, our goal is to use only steam for cleaning, therefore forgoing the use of chemical cleaning agents all together. Our laundry is also environmentally conscious – the fact that we are certified with the Austrian eco-label makes us very proud.

Bee my Partner.

BEE2B – Peter Brandl from Salzburg is a passionate beekeeper alongside his day job. When his daughter found out during her student job with us that we were looking for a “honey project” what was actually intended as an experiment finally turned out to be a stroke of luck for both sides . Our bee sponsorship has enabled them to purchase additional bee colonies, and we are also the exclusive buyer of the wonderful „Heuberg“ honey from gardens and flower meadows, which we serve to our guests for breakfast, sometimes as delicate blossom honey, sometimes as delicious cream honey.

Gilbert doesn't waste food.

In our restaurant &flora we try to process every part of the fruit and vegetables used. That way, we provide more taste and prevent waste at the same time. In general, we try to waste as little food as possible. That’s why we are also partners of “to good to go”. The food that is left over at the end of the day is loaded into the “Too good to go” app and you can take it home with you for a low price. You get a surprise bag in the usual Gilbert &flora quality, nothing is wasted and that makes our planet happy. Everyone wins.

Equal treatment

All employees are paid equally according to their training, other skills, and performance, regardless of gender, age, origin, or religious affiliation.

Men and women in the same position are expressly paid equally (no gender pay gap).

Workload

Employees are assigned tasks only to the extent of their employment. Overtime is avoided except during peak seasons. Enough employees are employed to enable all employees to enjoy a good and productive working atmosphere and a good work-life balance.

Integration

As far as possible within the company, employees with physical disabilities are included in the work process.

Coaching

All employees have anonymous access to trained psychotherapists and life coaches from the EAP Institute at any time, with the company covering the costs of coaching.

Further training

Further training (apprentice training, management seminars, labor law seminars, language courses, etc.) is offered to employees after evaluation of the economic feasibility and mutual benefit.

Each of our apprentices participates in a fixed program consisting of four units of two days each. During the three- or four-year apprenticeship, we try to enable each of our apprentices to participate in an apprenticeship exchange within Austria or a stay abroad of at least four weeks. Regular training courses are held for permanent staff, e.g., on communication, complaint management, or similar topics.
